COMET HALE-BOPP

Comet Hale-Bopp

  • Location: East side of Mt. Hamilton
  • Date and Time: 04:00 PST 8 March 1997
  • Lens: 50 mm f/2 Exposure: 40 seconds
  • Film: Ektapress 1600 pushed 1 stop

I believe that the background in this shot was actually the Milky Way. Viewing conditions were close to ideal, with a setting new moon and clear skies. The comet has two tails. The brighter one is composed of dust and debris which boil off of the comet as it nears sun. The other bluish tale is composed of ionized gases or plasma and is affected by the magnetic field associated with the solar wind.
