HP LABS PALO ALTO

HP Labs Palo Alto

The buildings at HP Labs have such a distinctive look to them that they're easy to spot when flying over. I took this picture from a 747 on Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, on my way back from Japan.

Flexible Displays

For the last 8 years I've been working on a project to create flexible displays on plastic webs using all roll-to-roll processes. A recent article in the Economist describes things more or less accurately. The goal is to eventually get to color displays of course, but for now we're just trying to do black and white. My main contribution is in imprinting the 3-D mask using imprint lithography. The picture on the right shows the web emerging from the imprinting station, where a 1.5 micron-thick liquid photopolymer is molded with sub-micron accuracy and then cured with high intensity UV light.
