SHUGAKUIN RIKYU
Shugakuin Rikyu
Shugakuin Rikyu is the other Imperial Villa (Detached Palace) in Kyoto,
besides Katsura Rikyu. It's located in the
foothills on the Northeast side of Kyoto. As with Katsura Rikyu,
reservations must be made ahead of time at
the Imperial Household Agency, but foreigners can do this the day before. This
villa actually consists of 3 separate gardens separated by rice fields. The
2 smaller gardens are beautiful themselves, but the third, larger garden is
truly impressive. The large pond (practically a small lake) was created by
building a dike.
