Fireworks in Japan are nothing like those in the U.S. From late July until early September there are several shows EVERY weekend and some on weekdays too. Most shows last over an hour, with the larger ones running an hour and a half, during which several thousand rounds are fired off. Detailed guides are published in magazines giving all the statistics, how to get there, best places to watch, etc. I saw 3 shows in 1998, the biggest being the Ichikawa/Edogawa Hanabi Taikai which used 14,000 rounds and was watched by about 450,000 people.
